Understanding your i4's AC charging capacity
With the standard 11 kW charger, an 11 kW Type 2 cable delivers the full capacity at any 3-phase point. The 68.7 kWh battery (eDrive35) fills overnight in roughly seven hours at 11 kW. The 84.3 kWh (eDrive40 / xDrive40) takes around eight hours. An 11 kW cable on a public 22 kW post will still charge at 11 kW, which is fully usable but leaves capacity unused. Cable length and port placement
The i4's charge port sits on the driver's side front flank, roughly level with the front wheel arch. This front placement is forgiving: the charging post is close regardless of how you park. 5 metres covers most domestic situations. 8 metres is the practical standard for mixed use. 10 metres removes uncertainty on tighter driveways. 15 metres handles genuinely awkward parking scenarios.
Portable AC charging for flexibility
An 84.3 kWh battery is substantial. A portable charger is not a home charger replacement for the i4, but it is a practical backup for trips, events and situations where a wallbox is not available.
